Recreate at Design Indaba

My favourite pick at the Design Indaba Expo not only embraces the trend for upcycling, but also reinvents iconic South African objects or craft, with innovation and a humorous twist.

[“Upcycling” is the process of converting waste materials or seemingly useless products into new materials or products, of better quality or a higher environmental value. It is a trend that found it’s roots in the eco movement but gained popularity during the recession. Instead of just throwing things away, objects are given a second life, and in most cases a more glamorous and different incarnation of their former function.]

Katie Thompson founded recreate in 2009; a company that specialises in repurposed furniture and lighting. She has a knack of not only using characterful discarded items like old suitcases or uniquely South African items like zinc baths, but transforms them into chairs or cupboards, and even oversized ottomans. The result is a curious mixture of quirky humour and refined elegance.

The pictures speak for themselves – and should leave a smile on your face.
